Level 3 Cambridge Technical in Sport and Physical Activity (OCR exam board)

Course Type: C-Tech/Vocational

OCR have designed refreshing and exciting content that’s up to date, engaging, and allows students to study a range of sport related topics.

Two options are available, either an extended certificate or diploma. Areas for study cover topics such as; 1) Body systems and the effects of physical activity; 2) Sports coaching and leadership; 3) Sports organisation and development; 8) Organisation of sports events; 17) Sports injuries and rehabilitation; 4) Working safely in sport; 6) Group exercise to music; 13) Health and fitness testing; 7) Improving fitness for sport; 11) Physical activity for specific groups; 12) Nutrition and diet; 19) Sports psychology; 10) Biomechanics and movement analysis.

The Assessment

Extended Certificate: Units 1 and 3 are assessed by exam and marked externally. All the other units are internally assessed by centre staff and externally moderated by OCR.

Diploma: Units 1, 3 and 4 are assessed by exam and marked externally. All the other units are internally assessed by centre staff and externally moderated by OCR.

For both choices, examined units are graded near-pass, pass, merit and Distinction. Internally examined units graded as pass, merit and distinction. The overall result is then dependent on the combination of each unit grade, with final grades being pass, merit, distinction and distinction *.

Skills / Employability

It will provide learners with the opportunity, through applied learning, to develop the core specialist knowledge, skills and understanding required in the sport and physical activity sector. Learners will also develop transferable skills that employers are looking for such as planning, communication, adaptability and leadership.

Learners will have opportunities to find out from employers how the skills and knowledge they will acquire are used in work.

Learners may have the opportunity to have work experience in a sports-based organisation.

Where could it take you?

This qualification is not just about being able to play sport; it will provide learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding to progress into Higher Education on a sport-related programme such as Sport and Physical Education, Sport Science, Sport Coaching and Development or Sport and Leisure Management. Equally it will prepare students to enter employment in many different roles within the sports industry.

Course Requirements

It is recommended that learners have, or are working towards, a grade 4 or above in GCSE PE, BTEC Sport, WJEC Sport or other Level 2 sport related course, in addition grade 4 or above in maths, science and English GCSEs.
